Purple Lashtastrophe

I tried my Sleek Drama Eyes purple mascara and it was so goopy! I tried to declump a bit with Anastasia Lash Genius, bit it didn't really fix the issue. Oh, well.

Check out this purple eye look done with my depotted Phyician's Formula Shimmer Strip Pop for Green eyes. These shades are lots of fun. I used my purple Eyeko eye liner pen, which is great at helping me make quick, clean defined cat eye flick. I also used the Urban Decay 24/7 pencil in Psychedelic Sister to tight line the upper lash line. Monochromatic all the way!

Tinkerbell Halloween

Had some fun on Halloween as Tinker Bell. Got a costume at Ozzie Dots in Los Feliz (Hollywood Blvd. just east of Vermont, north side of the street) in no time because they are so organized and well set up for Halloween.

Used my Anastasia brow stencils to do an eyebrow with teal and green colors from my Wet n' Wild party palette and my Crown Brush 180 palette.

Put on my blue-spotted feathery eyelashes. The eye look overall was gold and teal blended carefully into the crease with a neutral matte faun brown shade. The lip was Revlon Just Bitten Balm Stain in Honey with some highlighter from my NYX "butt" naked palette, the pinky-white shade.

Used Skindinavia's fix spray to keep the whole thing lasting all day long!

The best thing was talking to the kids during trick or treating. They were so cute. It felt like really being Tinker Bell!

I'm Baaa...aack! FOTD with Lovesick BalmStain

Back to Business...and Basics, a FOTD

When I first started this beauty blog, FOTDs, or Face of the Day, was almost all I did! And I still just love putting on a fresh new face in the morning, photographing it, and writing down how I did it.

Back from the big trip to Europe, and I didn't want to be depressed, like, poor me, I have to go back to work, so I put on the brightest dress I own right now, this hot pink number from Title Nine. It wicks and it's comfy, but it makes a splash.

And, although I'd bought all this cool new stuff, I had an unopened Revlon Just Bitten Balmstain in Lovesick in one of my drawers. The hot pink lip! Great for Fall, said one my September magazines, so here goes. It's pretty bright, which means, I love it!

Whee!

Since I couldn't take it on my trip, I thought I'd break out that trusty Anastasia Brow Express kit with the little stencils. Stencils are good when your hand might be a bit jet lagged, along with the rest of you. The Brow Express kit has a great shimmery highlight color and a slightly darker matte shade of shadow so you can create just a very subtle eye, like one Marilyn might have used with a bright lip.

I deepened this with the Wet n' Wild Petal Pusher palette, the Eyelid, Crease, and Definer colors on the right side.

These eye shadows have a buttload of fallout, but the colors are so pretty. All you have to do, in order to deal with the fallout, though, is not to put on the your foundation and concealer before you are done using them. One small adjustment. So worth it, with all that pigmentation for like five bucks!

Ooh, yeah!

Yay! You likee? I love the way the super-bright lip makes the burgundy shades on the eye seem almost neutral.

Olympic Edition: Waterproof Workout Makeup

It's the big day, everybody! Go USA! The opening ceremonies are tonight. And the cycling road race is tomorrow. Apparently if I wanted to I could get up at 2am and watch it on my iPad. We'll see if my home WiFi can really deliver that. Hmmm.

I am thrilled to see how London does their Olympics!

I'm headed to London in a couple of weeks so I'm reading London history and downloading Tube maps for my mobile devices and virtual guide books. If I have time I'll put together a post on what I'm bringing. I hope to have time to do a photo for that really cool "I am packed" blog that just shows people's stuff neatly folded and arranged for a trip.

But today I have for you a video about makeup you can wear when you are working out, or even when you are doing a race as long as a half marathon. That's the longest race I've run.

And when I say race, I mean, sort of a stroll. The RunDisney races always have lots to look at, lots of characters to get your picture taken with. I never do these things to set records because, let's face it, I'm not going to do that, but to have fun and to test myself. And to give myself a reason to train. That's one way I try to stay fit. Try it! It works!

Race SWAG! Race Expo finds!

 

Plus, running an organized race like the Tinker Bell Half Marathon (sorry, it's already sold out for the 2013 edition, but Run Disney has lots more great races, so check them out!) is just exciting and fun. You get a little swag bag. You get a gorgeous medal!!! You meet fellow weekend warrior athletes, and there's usually an expo where they sell cute workout duds, and great tools to help you as a runner. Tinker Bell's Expo had all kinds of cool running things for girls, like gorgeous Sweatybands.com headbands that stay on, hold your hair back very well. So well the Olympic Beach Vollyball teams could wear them. But they also come in an amazing array of colors, patterns and textures. Seriously, you'll find one to match any outfit. Love! Have to get more!

They also sold wings you can run in with matching skirts and arm warmers. OMG! This year I'll definitely do a haul video on what I pick up. Can't wait!

Here are the products I used to achieve this waterproof look:

Eyes:

• Inner Corner and Browbone: Maybelline Color Tattoo Cream Eye Shadow in 05 Too Cool
• Eyelid: MUFE Aqua Cream in 13 (white gold) on eyelids from lash line to crease
• Crease, outer eyelid "wedge" and outer third of lower lash line: MUFE Aqua Cream in 15 (bronze) Use a dense brush to blend this in quickly at the edges. It sets up quickly and then will not move.
• Mascara: Smashbox Full Exposure in Jet Black, let dry, then coat with Anastasia Lash Genius, which makes every and any mascara waterproof! It works!
• Eye Liner and Tight Line: MUFE Aqua Eyes Pencil in Black 0L
• Eye brow: Milani Brow Tint Pen

Cheeks:

• Apples: MUFE Aqua Cream in 9? (Hey, MUFE folks. First of all, name your colors to make them memorable, second of all, make it so the print of the shade doesn't wear off the packaging so easily.) A pretty coral pink shade you can also use on lips.
• Contour: Jouer Luminizing Moisure tint in bronze. If you are darker than me, check out a nice matte brown shade in the MUFE line. It will last better than this probably will. This is just what I had to hand. I like how it blends, though.

Face:

• The high SFF product of your choice that doesn't pill under foundation: Try Neutrogena Sport Face
• Aveda Mineral Tinted Moisture in 02/Beechwood. I like a tinted moisturizer because anything heavier will run and get all over your cute workout duds.
• Concealer: My fave is Dermablend in my shade, Sand. Try not to use this if you can avoid it. I, personally, need a bit of coverage.
• Powder: Bare Minerals Mineral Veil. You gotta set the cream products
• Powder Concealer: Bare Minerals Bisque. This will make your concealer not sweat off quite so quickly.

Lips:

• Smashbox Limitless Lip Stain & Color Seal Balm in Sangria. Lasts at least 4 hours on me!!! But the name is too darned long. Smashbox, I love you. Explore the beauty of pithiness in the naming of your products.

Quick Bike to Work look

Some days when you bike to work it goes a bit pear-shaped.

Yesterday it was Monday, I was a bit behind, and my hair as I blew it dry in my office with the door shut, just refused to come together.

I guess the same thing could happen on any day, but it's particularly stressful when my office is doubling as my dressing room/vanity area, and I can hear folks outside starting to get about their day.

Anyway, my weapon of choice makeup-wise was still the NYX nude on nude palette, but I did a simple brown tone all over my eyelid up to the crease and faded it toward the brow bone with a touch of highlight color. This is the deep brown that has a bit of golden sparkles in it. The basic shape is a 20s style dark pool eyelid, which is kind of the Jazz Age gramma of today's Smokey Eye.

Finished it out with some mascara and black eye pencil, and a pink lip. To add some summer feeling, I went a bit heavier on the bronzer/contour.

I have to say, I'm really liking the way my brows look when I use a taupey brown eye shadow with an angled brush instead of a pencil, or the whole wax, stencil and two tones Anastasia thing. The stencil and wax thing does have its place, but I've learned I like free-handing the brows. It's more artsy, and I am a designer. If you don't feel as comfortable doing that, then try that Anastasia Brow Express kit. It really is wonderful to have the stencil helping you find that nice Liz Taylor sculpted brow shape.

Just bought this pink sleeveless dress from Title 9. Love the breezy summer shape and the pretty hot pink color. The material is so cottony soft.

BTW, my biking has me a little over a pound away from my Weight Watchers goal weight. How 'bout that?

Bike to Work: NYX nude on nude FOTD

Doesn't look like I biked to work today, does it?

My company has many incentives if you want to carpool, take public transportation or bike to work, and several years ago, I joined the company's Triathlon team to get healthy and fit and make friends across different divisions. It is a very rewarding thing to do! We raise money and have fund raising events throughout the year for a local charity.

The upshot is that I used to bike to work a lot, and then because of lots of nighttime commitments I stopped. But now if you bike to work 3x per week you get this really cute bike jersey. Want to know how to motivate me? SWAG!

plus a little MAC graphblack pencil around the lash line,

My Unii Palette in Lavender. These are my most basic neutral shades, all depotted. Great for work!
I used the circular blush in the center on my cheeks.
For contour I used the Aveda three-pan on the upper right.

All over the lid and on the browbone I used the soft pale taupe top left.
In crease and on outer edge of eyelid in V I used the blue-gray top row, second from right.
On lash line I used the charcoal black top row, all the way to the right.

Lips:

• I only used the frosty pink gloss third from the left from the NYX palette. You can't tell from the photo, but it is the frostiest of all of the pinks of the 5 on the left. It lasts longer and has the same taste as their lip glosses.

Results:

• I like that there are some warmer and cooler options in the NYX palette eyes. The photos make the colors more vivid than they are. Really it's a neutral palette with a few warmer and cooler accent shades.
• The lip palette is particularly useful. I wish it included a darker berry shade, but mostly, it's got you covered.
• Biking to work makes me feel better all day long. I'm just way more cheerful. I'll be doing this a lot more.

Salma Hayek Nuance Eye Quad Look and Review

Cool Packaging. Natural tie-in with Prometheus? Me? Scifi geek? Yup!

 This packaging is cool looking on the outside, but it snaps together with a bit of wobble when it closes. Wonder how it will wear?

 That's the applicator in the middle. The shape is not all that usable. I say, replace it with a brush, maybe. I won't be using it.

The pic doesn't look at all like the shades, either in the pan or on the eye. Please can I help you name your shadows?

 The color payoff isn't near what is suggested by the eye illustration. The shades blend pretty well. I especially like the burgundy shade, aka Frosted Blush. Blush? This is a pretty dark color to call "blush."

Nuance Neutral Eye Quad:

Not sure any of these shadows are better than my beloved NYX Butt Naked Palette colors. The only one that's different is the burgundy one, and it needed lots of applications to build up enough color for me. There is one matte shade, and I'd have made two out of the four matte.  It's just a good practice to make half of a neutral quad matte shades, so you can use two for day, if you are shy of frost or shimmer. The bronze and champagne shades are not different enough from each other to create enough contrast for me. The coolest thing about this quad is the packaging. Sorry, Salma.  I think you are awesome and gorgeous, brave and deservedly a fashion icon. I love your brow pencil, but this needs, I don't know, a bit more love.  How about some subtle blue duochrome in one of the frosts?

Pretty gold flecks in the Anastasia Bellini gloss

The Two Faced Lip Insurance: This didn't make my lipstick/gloss combo last any longer than it might otherwise have, I don't think. But I have more testing to do. I think the gloss made the whole thing dissolve pretty quickly, which is too bad, because I loved the way it looked at first application. The full red lip will be the big litmus test.

Rescued by Revlon Fire & Ice

 Some days you just don't have that much time to get ready. Yesterday was like that--one of those scattered Manic Mondays when you just don't want to get going, and nothing in terms of makeup seems particularly inspiring. But like a superhero, here comes Revlon's Fire & Ice to the rescue!

 This is a pretty subtle application of the Red Lip. It's really only working as a stain here, but I find that just that little touch of red brightens up my whole face. Revlon, Revlon...how slowly you unveil your secrets.

How to get it? Just take the lipstick and tap it lightly inside your lip line until you have some nice even but thin color, then blot with a tissue. So simple, and the light application makes it easy to control. And you don't end up looking like Bette Davis in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

 I paired it with the bright coral shade from my NYX Butt Naked Palette on cheeks, a pretty strong brow pencil application, using Anastasia's Brow Wiz in Ashe Blonde.  There's just a touch of Loreal eye quad gold and gleaming white shadow, and nothing to contour my eyes here.

I could have taken much more time on my eyes, but I'm finding that if I emphasize the upper lash line with some black pencil tightlined and then above, with a flick and fill it in so the line gets thicker, it really lifts my face.

Julep's Maven test is right about me, I am sort of American Classic, or at least, that's what seems to look best on me.

Revlon's Historic Lipstick Shades

Unlike the day 2 weeks ago when I went nuts trying to keep a bold red lip going all day long, and had the fun of watching folks at the office do double takes at my lips, this looks blended right in, and yet it still felt a bit striking. Just a touch of Monday morning panache.

Yes, you've seen this red blouse before. I think I got it at Macy's and it's INC. This line of theirs is full of great office wear staples and I suppose if I were more practical and less of an inner hippie I'd shop in that department much more. I thought I'd top this blouse with a nice black vest, to give it some menswear flair, and to make it look like I don't have only one red blouse in my wardrobe. Is that such a crime?

One thing you start to learn from photographing yourself just about every day is what looks good. So here's what I've learned so far:

• Red's a nice color on me.
• My brows need some emphasizing
• Black liner and mascara works best when I'm pressed for time
• Bright lips work best on me, as opposed to pales shades like pinks and nudes

Some of these points are surprising.

So, Dear Readers, why don't you try photographing your morning out the door looks for around a month and see what you learn.  Let me know how it goes. Kind of a fun exercise.

Today is Tuesday. Maybe I'll try Revlon's Persian Melon (a bright warm pink), and see if I can get that kind of icky Moon Drops sense memory out of my brain. (I'm talking about the slightly floral scent the Moon Drops formula has, that still calls to mind my Aunt Diana's old cigarette butts.)
