30 Day Makeup Challenge: Day 13, 4 Colors on Eyes!

I'm not going to lie. This one scared me. Wearing four different colors on my eyes, I worried, was going to make my colleagues at work give me some pretty strange looks.

I could have worn four different neutral colors, I suppose, but that seemed to me like cheating. And not nearly as much fun. A day look with four different true colors? Now that's a makeup challenge, people!

I have to take my hat off to the color wheel, and my art teachers throughout the years who told me about using harmonious colors. Harmonious colors are the ones that are next to each other on the wheel. They play nicely together. I picked some from the warm side, from the golds and oranges, reds and pinks.

1.Matte purple crease. 2. Shimmery bronze-orange outer lid.
3. Shimmery antique gold in center of lid. 4. Matte ellow toward the tear duct.

I wore neutral gray clothes with all this color on my face.

Here are the colors I used from the Crown Brush Kaleidescope 180 Palette, which really comes in handy for these challenges. I love knowing I do have pretty much every color of the rainbow.

Last thoughts:

• Going to the Makeup Show LA today and scared and excited! Scared I'll spend too much, but won't get the right things. Excited to see my fellow beauty fans and gurus there. I'll have plenty of stuff to show you from there, lovely readers!
• Loving L'Oreal Voluminous Mascara in Carbon Black. Wondering, does it come in waterproof so I can wear it for swimming?
• Signed up for the Nautica Malibu Triathlon again this year. Year 5 or 6 for me. Can't remember.
• Started cross training instead of just running on Thursdays nights. My quads are killing me and I can feel my abs. Not that they are now rock hard are anything, it's just that I can feel them. 

The next big thing in this Makeup Challenge is my zombie makeup look. That will take some doing. Hmmmm. Not wearing that to work, that's for sure!

30 Day Makeup Challenge: Pink Eye Shadow

I love pink eye shadow, but I know that it needs to be anchored with browns or grays in order to avoid that irritated or diseased look. I just love pink on my skin. I think it works because my skin has a golden tone rather than a pink tone, so there's a contrast.

I created kind of a mosaic of pink, starting with my Maybelline Color Tattoo in the new limited edition pale pink shade, using my Inglot rainbow pinks, which are matte, then adding Toasted from the Urban Decay Naked Palette on the outer edge of the lids, and Cocoa and Espresso from my Mehron palette in the crease and along the lash line. Finally, I used a bright pink on the inner half of the lids from my Crown Brush Kaleidescope Palette. This was one of the brightest shades I have. Not Sugarpill Dollypop bright, but pretty bright.

I used my Revlon Just Bitten Balmstain in Honey on the lips, and my Sleep Makeup Face Form in lights to do contour, blush and highlighter.

30-Day Makeup Challenge: Most Creative!

To do my "most creative" makeup I started with a stark white face using Cinema Secrets white and went for a look that is kind of Mrs. Lovett meets Kabuki meets Cirque du Soleil. It was fun! I just love playing with bright colors. I challenged myself by starting super-garish and then blending and adding and layering until it sort of worked. Here are a bunch of photos.

I used the dark violet shade from this Sleek Acid Palette on the outer third of my lids.

I started with Miami on the middle third of my eyelids.
This is the Crown 180 Kaleidescope Palette. I really love messing around with it.

I used a blue, a green and a violet from this Crown 180 Palette on the lids
below the crease.

I used an Anastasia brow stencil and filled in with the super bright coral pinky-red,
then did the top half with a warm gold. Both are in the photo below.

The brightest color here is on my eyebrows. I think colorful brows are fun when you're going for a super-crazy look.

I really enjoyed using lots of colors on my lids. See the turquoise,
voilet, aqua, green, and plurple? I used a Limecrime liquid eyeliner on the upper lash line, too.

I got this lip with a Milani retractible lip pencil in the darkest plum. Then I added a Milani Haut Flash purple glittery gloss. I love Milani products. See the turquoise pencil under my eyes?

I used my La Femme Coral blush as a contour under the cheekbones
and around the hairline.

These false lashes are the Ardell Wild Lash line - they are feathers with cobalt-blue spots. I believe these were so popular that you can't even get them online!
Glad I'm not the only drag queen out there.

Tinkerbell Halloween

Had some fun on Halloween as Tinker Bell. Got a costume at Ozzie Dots in Los Feliz (Hollywood Blvd. just east of Vermont, north side of the street) in no time because they are so organized and well set up for Halloween.

Used my Anastasia brow stencils to do an eyebrow with teal and green colors from my Wet n' Wild party palette and my Crown Brush 180 palette.

Put on my blue-spotted feathery eyelashes. The eye look overall was gold and teal blended carefully into the crease with a neutral matte faun brown shade. The lip was Revlon Just Bitten Balm Stain in Honey with some highlighter from my NYX "butt" naked palette, the pinky-white shade.

Used Skindinavia's fix spray to keep the whole thing lasting all day long!

The best thing was talking to the kids during trick or treating. They were so cute. It felt like really being Tinker Bell!

Swatch Saturday: Crown Brush 180 Palette Panel 3

Crown Brush 180 Palette Panel 3

The day before yesterday was Swatch Saturday for me. I decided to get back to cataloging the massive and daunting Crown Brush Palette. But Yesterday was the Nautica Malibu Triathlon, so that's why you are getting this post today!

The Tri was really a fun race, the ocean was smooth and the current was with us, the water temperature was a balmy 71 degrees! And on the run, just when it should have been starting to get too hot, a blessedly soft white marine layer of cloud and fog rolled in at either end of Zuma Beach. Such a great day!

And speaking of ocean, this panel has lots of watery blue and green shades. If you haven't checked out my first two posts on this palette, click here to read Panel One, and here to read Panel Two.

So here's what I did starting with Panel Two, and I know once I get through this monster of a palette, I'll want to go back and do it with Panel One, as well: I named all the shades. Yes, it's hard to do that, but it's also a great copy writing exercise, so maybe I should thank Crown, and Inglot, and Wet n' Wild, and others, for not naming their palette shades, instead of whining about the fact that they have no names. I suppose I'd rather whine a bit. I know if I had a cosmetics company, I'd be naming all of my shades to make them memorable. And that's the end of my mini-rant.

So as I go, I'm naming all the shades. It makes it a heck of a lot easier to talk about them. Et voila! Here is the panel with my names!

Crown Brush Palette 180 Kaleidescope, Panel 3

This palette does really give you a whole lot of options! If you've been reading my blog, you know I love blue and green eye shadow probably a lot more than I should. There are some days when I do risk verging into Frank N Furter territory with my makeup. I think one of the keys to avoiding this is to keep a lot of neutrals going on the other parts of ones face, and in the crease.

Here are my favorites:

• Ariel and Siren are so intense and shiny. It's always easier to find highly pigmented shimmery shades, I've noticed, although I don't know the science behind this fact. I'd love to know why matte shades so often take a lot of work to build up intensity. This fact definitely holds true in this palette.
• Loden, Tiber and Thames. See there what I did with the names? I was just in London and Rome, and since these were murkier muted shades, I named two of them after the rivers in those cities. Ain't I clever? (I expect you to throw a pie at me at any moment, and it would be deserved.) Anyways, these 3 shades are the most neutral and wearable for fall. Thames and Tiber have some nice antiquey gold shimmer to them.
• Antifreeze. It would be wrong to wear this crazy bright green with a touch of teal on my eyelids. Really, this is the color of tennis nets, mosquito netting from the seventies, and other tackle you might find on a boat. It's wrong, and that's why I love it. Challenge.  Can you rock this shade or something similar without going full-on Little Mermaid or Frank N Furter? Can you? Do it, and link me to the images/video on the comments below!
• Siren, Reef and Cruise - These are so marine blue. They are all shades you find in the Mediterranean, and so they make me happy. Oh, I love me some ocean! This weekend the Pacific at Malibu was 71 degrees, people! For me, that's no wet suit water! Yay! There were dolphins! The curling waves were beautiful but not so large as to be dangerous. No one's there now because it's after Labor Day, so it's easy to park. Go there! It's a heat wave! Swim in the water, it's so nice!
• Bayou, Tardis and Gloaming. Yes, I'm a Dr. Who fan, a Whovian, if you will. If you have Netflix, start watching the modern seasons, starting with the Christopher Eccleston ones. You'll thank me. Yes, it's silly, yes, it's a kid's show, but it also gets you weepy, and it can really scare the pith out of you. Watch, and tell me I'm wrong. I love this show! So that's why one of these colors just had to be Tardis blue to me. I love the delicate violet tones of these blues. I think they would probably look super-pretty on brown eyes. And they will maybe look cray-cray with my light hair and green eyes, but I want to try them anyway.

Swatch Sunday: Crown Brush Palette Panel #2

Here's panel number 2 of my Crown Brush mega 180-shadow palette.

I love the color scheme of this one, even if the shades are mostly tough to wear. I think it will be fun to play with them and see which ones play well together.

I got very un-excited about using letters and numbers to name the shades like I did with panel #1, so I took a header and decided to name the shades myself. Here's what I came up with:

As you'll see, not all of these swatch like a dream. There is not a lot of consistency here. Goldenrod and Happy Birthday are very intensely pigmented, whereas Eos is much brighter in the pan than on the skin.

I mentioned last time how I think the bottom row with the speckles is kind of a cheat. But I do like Rattler, Orange Comet and Blacktop, so I kind of have to take that back.

What do you think? I think these are really fun! I'm going to try leaning on the neutrals and adding pops of the bright colors.
